New Kensington Annual Health and Safety Fair 2011

October 11, 2011 Athena Child Development in conjunction with the Community Health Clinic in New Kensington, PA sponsored the 2011 Annual Health and Safety Fair on Saturday October 1, 2011.

Despite the wind and rain, children and their families braved the weather to attend the fair for a little community fun. It is a day that local community agencies join together to provide an abundance of information to families regarding health and safety issues. The fair is a fun event for families that is free of charge. One of the big hits at the fair is a petting zoo with pony rides. The Athena family raises money all year to provide this event to the public.

All proceeds are sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Attendees ate lots of good food and the opportunity to learn about the many resources the community has to offer. This year the fair also included characters such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse!

Congratulations CTA Class of 2011

July 22, 2011 Career Training Academy held its 2011 graduation ceremony on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the Quality Inn in Harmar, PA at 7:30pm. The faculty and administration from all 3 campuses, as well as family and friends of the graduates, were there to celebrate their achievements. Graduation included an inspirational speech from Mr. John M. Reddy, President of Career Training Academy, the recognition of each graduates' award, and ended with a candle light ceremony.

These graduates are our future Medical Assistants, Medical Billers and Coders, Dental Assistants, and Massage Therapists. These students worked diligently to succeed during lectures, practicum and clinic experience and externships over the past 6 to 18 months to complete their programs. Career Training Academy would once again like to congratulate the 150 graduates of the Class of 2011!!

A NEW Way to Communicate with Students

July 20, 2011 It is very important that schools be able to communicate with students the information they need in a prompt manner. There are so many ways to communicate in this technological driven world in which we live. Options range from social media such as Facebook, cell phones, email, text messaging, and yes, even still regular postal mail delivery. Career Training Academy has adopted all of these methods with the exception of text messaging – until recently!

Students that are interested in coming to school for one of the many programs we offer will now be able to text “CTA1” to 76274 for more information. For currently enrolled students to receive important school information such as school closing due to weather, continuing education classes and financial aid deadlines, they will be able to opt in to these alerts by texting “CTA2” to 76274.

If you think about how you like to get information and reminders, text messaging is probably one of the most convenient ways especially since many people today do not leave home without their cell phone. Career Training Academy wanted to be sure to offer the communication and information students, prospective students and future graduates wanted and needed. Text messaging is one more option to get it quickly.

July 20, 2011 June 23, 2011 - Career Training Academy was awarded the Silver Award for the 2011 Reader's Choice Regional Awards from the Tribune Review. This is such an exciting honor! Thank you to all who voted for us!

CTA recognized by Governor’s Office – 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction

June 09, 2011 Career Training Academy (CTA) is honored by its inclusion in the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction. CTA has been included on the Honor Roll each of the last 4 years, and is the only career school in Pennsylvania that this honor has been bestowed upon.

Recently, CTA was also recognized for its’ efforts in this area by PennSERVE, The Governor’s Office of Citizen Service with a letter of appreciation and recognition. The letter states, “Your commitment to service is appreciated not only on your campus and in your community, but across the state and on the national level as well.”

In order to make application to this distinguished listing, CTA was required to demonstrate outstanding community service that is done throughout the year. Here at Career Training Academy, we believe that community service builds character and self-esteem. As a result, we expect our students to participate in various community service projects. We believe that by employing these techniques in the learning process the student is more prepared for entry level occupations in their field of study.

This honor is dedicated to all of the students, faculty and staff for their selflessness and commitment to helping their community. These individuals participate in activities including Relay for Life, Presents for Patients, helping the local Animal Shelter, and the Food Bank.

Resources to help CTA students

April 12, 2011 Students deal with a number of things while they are going to school. Some of those things do not have anything to do with school or academics - they are more personal in nature. In an effort to help our students with those other areas, Career Training Academy has partnered with a few organizations including: Student Resource Services, Gateway Rehabilitation, and the Alle-Kiski Hope Center.

Student Resource Services is a program provided to all active students free of charge. This program includes telephone counseling and coaching, resource referral, a website with tools and additional resources, and individualized counseling if necessary. This program is provided 24hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Information about Student Resource Services can be found on their website at www.studentlifetools.com

Gateway Rehabilitation Center, a private, not-for-profit organization, is a positive force in the prevention, treatment, education and research of substance abuse and alcoholism. A representative from Gateway Rehabilitation will visit the CTA campus on a semi-annual basis to provide information to our students regarding information and resources about drug and alcohol abuse, prevention and treatment. Information about Gateway Rehabilitation can be found at www.gatewayrehab.org.

The Alle-Kiski HOPE Center is a domestic violence agency serving the Alle-Kiski Valley area in Southwestern PA. The Alle-Kiski Area HOPE Center has been working to reduce domestic violence in the
Alle-Kiski community since 1979 by providing services and support to empower victims through a crisis hotline, crisis intervention counseling, education, shelter, and advocacy. A community representative visits CTA on a semi-annual basis to provide this information to our students. Information regarding the Hope Center can be found at www.akhopecenter.org.

These are a few of the organizations Career Training Academy has partnered with to provide this important information to our students. With CTA students training for careers in the medical field and have a desire to help people, this information may be able to assist them in the future as well.

The core collection includes Gale/Info Trac databases with Informe, ProQuest, eLibrary, Credo, RCL Web and Books in Print.

CTA students can access the LIRN Library from anywhere that has an internet connection 24/7 including school, home or work. Students have access through the “Student Supportal”, where they can also access their academic information including grades and attendance through a secure connection.

CTA Massage Students Complete Medical Massage Research Project

March 11, 2011 Congratulations to Janice Miller, Christy Gordon, and Christina Skinner. These three women recently graduated from the Advanced Bodyworker, Associates in Specialized Technology Degree Program at Career Training Academy.

Upon completion of 15 class modules, Advanced Bodyworker students must complete a Medical Massage and Research Course. This course enables the students to apply practical skills acquired in the classroom to serious conditions and diseases. The students work under the instruction of an advisor with two clients over a period of 4 weeks. During this time the student will research any condition or disorder their client presents and form a treatment plan based on this information. The students document the progress of these sessions and present their material including their research, treatment plan, client evaluation, and observations of the outcomes to the school.

Advanced Bodyworker students have found this class to be an interesting and valuable culmination of their studies throughout the program. Congratulations Christy, Janice and Christina on your hard work, dedication and future careers in Massage Therapy!!
